The Occupational Health and Safety Management System should include the following elements:
The three essential parts of an organization's OH&S management system are (i)hazard identification, (ii) risk assessment, and (iii) determination of the appropriate controls. Because these three fundamental features offer the important foundation for the successful implementation of the OH&S management system, it is critical for the organization to treat these basic aspects with importance for an effective OH&S management system. These three fundamental features are discussed further down.

Hazard identification is the process of recognizing the presence of a hazard. A hazard is a source or circumstance that has the potential to cause human injury or illness.

The process of analyzing the risk posed by danger is known as risk assessment. The risk can be defined as a mix of the likelihood of a hazardous occurrence, or exposure, and the severity of the injury, or poor health, that the event of exposure can produce.

Determination of applicable controls - These are the steps that can be taken to eliminate or decrease risk to a manageable level. A control hierarchy is used to determine these measures. The OH&S management system's structure is built around two primary concepts: continuous improvement and regulatory compliance.
