The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standard was created with the goal of assisting companies in lowering work-related illnesses, accidents, and injuries.

It offers a framework to enhance health and well-being at work, decrease occupational risks, and increase safety, allowing a company to proactively enhance OH&S performance. It adheres to the same high-level structure as other ISO management system standards, such as ISO 9001 (quality management) and ISO 14001, and is intended to be integrated into an organization's current management procedures (environmental management).
