An organization must carry out the following actions before implementing an environmental management system:
Creation of an environmental strategy that is consistent with its commitments;
The selection of the person or people in charge of coordinating it;
Determine the relationship between the organization and the environment;
The determination of current and future environmental consequences;
Discovering pertinent legal and other criteria;
Establishing environmental goals, targets, and initiatives;
Tracking and evaluating the results in order to reach the goals;
Reviewing the system and the organization's environmental performance; and ongoing environmental performance improvement.
