The ISO advises against using the term "ISO certification" to denote that a system or product has been approved by a certification authority as meeting an ISO standard. Instead, ISO advises utilizing the complete identification of the ISO standard when referring to approved goods or systems.

For instance, ISO advises using the word "ISO 9001:2015 certified" rather than "ISO certified." This accurately indicates the standard being certified and its version, in this example, the 2015 release of ISO 9001:2015.

Despite not offering certificates, the ISO's Committee on Conformity Assessment develops guidelines for the certification procedure.
